This is carried out through a highly engaged and collaborative approach.

Pathway to discovery and commercialization

We screen existing enzyme libraries to find suitable starting enzymes for your application. Our enzyme libraries contain cumulative knowledge gained from proprietary machine-learning software, as well as decades of expertise and guidance from our scientists. Commercially relevant enzymes can sometimes be identified at this stage.

A short project usually consisting of two rounds of evolution, a proof-of-concept program applies the CodeEvolver® technology platform to optimize an enzyme’s performance. This offers a relatively inexpensive risk calibration and quantification of the enzyme’s potential for improvement, as well as a useable enzyme for a partner’s process development.

Working in close partnership with R&D and business stakeholders to define target performance characteristics, we apply our technology to improve and tailor enzyme attributes. An intermediate enzyme is delivered to enable verification of ongoing improvement and application-relevant feedback to the evolution program. A final, optimized enzyme in quantities sufficient to validate meeting a partner’s commercial objectives is delivered, prior to investing in scale-up and commercialization.

When directed evolution of an enzyme is deemed complete, you have a variety of options to access the optimized enzyme variant. Depending on the market application, these may include exclusive pilot and commercial-scale supply of the enzyme; licensing models to enable self-manufacture; or incorporation of the enzyme into a wider synthetic pathway licensing for the CodeEvolver® technology platform.
