The following example illustrates how intermediates developed using Codexis technology can improve chemical manufacturing by reducing production costs.

The Challenge: Cut Production Costs for High Volume Intermediate

N-Acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) is an intermediate ClosecloseIntermediateA material produced during the synthesis of an API. An intermediate undergoes molecular change or purification before it becomes the API. Each reaction step may create one or more intermediates. used in the manufacture of a number of anti-virals. The current manufacturing process inefficiently converts the raw materials to the desired intermediate and requires separate reactors for each step in the process. This results in high costs for both raw materials and use of capital equipment.

The Solution: "One Pot, Two-Enzyme Process"

Codexis developed a “one pot, two-enzyme” process to produce the NANA intermediate. The biocatalytic process greatly improves the efficient use of raw materials and enables the entire process to be conducted in a single reactor.

The Results: Lower Cost, High Volume

  • Process was developed from concept to multi hundred-liter scale within 12 months.
