Mr. Mayr became Executive Vice President - Pharmaceutical Operations for Lilly in September 1999, with responsibility for pharmaceutical operations worldwide and sales and marketing globally. He is also a member of their corporate Policy Committee. A native of Austria, he received a master's degree in chemistry and chemical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Zurich, Switzerland) in 1969 and an MBA from Stanford University in 1972. Mayr joined Eli Lilly International Corporation, a Lilly subsidiary, as a sales representative for the affiliate in West Germany in 1972, and in 1974, he became a market development manager for the Middle East area. In 1976, he was transferred to the United States as market research manager for the Dista division in Indianapolis and subsequently as sales manager of the Pittsburgh area. In August 1977, he returned to Europe as director of pharmaceutical operations for Austria and Switzerland, first based in Geneva, Switzerland, and then in Vienna, Austria. In 1980, he became general manger of Lilly operations in the Benelux countries and was named area director of East European operations and of Austria and Switzerland in 1981. Mayr served as general manager of the West German affiliate from 1984 to 1986. During this time, he was also named a vice president of Lilly International. In 1986, he was named vice president for Lilly European operations in Benelux, France, Germany and Italy. He became senior vice president for Europe in 1988 with additional responsibility for Spain and UK, and executive vice president for Europe in 1991 with additional responsibility for Scandinavia, East Europe, Middle East and Africa. He became president of Lilly International pharmaceutical operations (responsible for Europe, the Middle East and Africa) in 1993, and in 1997 his responsibilities included Asia, Japan, Australia, Latin America, Canada, Central/East Europe, Middle East and Africa.
He is a member of the board of directors of Bank Austria-Creditanstalt A.G., a member of the board of OMV AG, a member of the European Advisory Board of Guidant Corporation and a member of the board of Project Hope. By appointment of Secretaries of Commerce Daley and Evans, he is a member of the U.S.-Egypt President's Council, chaired by the presidents of the U.S.A and Egypt. He is a member of the Circle of Patrons of INSEAD, a patron of the British Red Cross, and a council member of the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum. He is a past chairman of the International Executive Committee of the Pharmaceutical Research Manufacturers of America and past chairman of the Europe Committee. From 1995-1997 and 2000-2002, he was a member of the board of the European Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industry. Mr. Mayr is the recipient of the Grand Decoration of Honour in Silver for services to the Republic of Austria, and recipient of the Decoration of Honour in Gold for services to the State of Vienna. In July 2004, he joined the board of Codexis Inc. as a special advisor to the board of directors.
