Dr. Rothwell joined the Codexis Board in 2007. He is Vice President of Innovation and Chemicals Technology, Shell Global Solutions, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell plc. He is based in Houston and has global responsibility for identifying and leveraging innovation and chemical technology across the Shell Group, including all biodomain research. He sits on both the Shell Global Solutions and Shell Chemicals Leadership Teams. He has a strong technical background combined with extensive experience in strategy and business roles. He joined Shell in 1980 with a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has undergraduate degrees in mathematics and chemistry from Michigan State University.
In his first decade at Shell, Dr. Rothwell worked as a research manager and research chemist at the Westhollow Technology Centre in Houston. In 1990 he moved to Shell's offices in Houston and over the next seven years worked in a number of strategic planning and business assignments. In 1998 he relocated to London and served as Head of Corporate Strategy, Planning and Ventures for Shell Chemicals. In 2002, he was appointed to the position of General Manager of Shell Chemicals global $2bln Ethylene Oxide/Glycols business, a position he held until his current appointment.
