Chemicals for consumer products

Converting waste to sustainable household products

Products and technology from Codexis can help the chemicals industry reduce supply chain volatility, replace petroleum-based, environmentally-sensitive raw materials with plentiful biomass, and gain a competitive performance advantage in the marketplace.

Detergent alcohols for use in household products such as shampoos and laundry detergents represent a $6 billion market worldwide today, expected to reach $8 billion in a decade. In partnership with leading engineering firm Chemtex, Codexis will produce biobased CodeXol™ detergent alcohol products for this market on an industrial scale, using sustainable agricultural products and waste as feedstocks.

The Codexis approach can reduce dependence on petroleum while preserving vital rain forest habitats. At the same time, Codexis will enable our customers to reduce supply chain risks and lower shipping costs by manufacturing products in the geographies where they will be sold.

CodeXol™ Detergent Alcohols

CodeXol™ detergent alcohols can provide more sustainable raw material alternatives to the chemicals industry. In partnership with global engineering firm Chemtex, Codexis is developing second-generation detergent alcohols made from cellulosic biomass. Detergent alcohols are used in surfactants, the chemical soaping and foaming agents used in household and consumer products such as laundry detergent, shampoo, toothpaste and mouthwash.
